This print commemorates the performance of the popular onnagata Ichikawa Shōchō II (1886–1940) as the courtesan Oman, in A Modern Satsuma Song, who is slain by her lover Genogobei in a jealous rage. The story is one of several dramatizations of a multiple murder that took place in Osaka in 1737, called Oman-Gengobei mono, or “Oman-Gengobei things.”
