In the play A Message of Love from Yamato, the courier Chūbei steals government funds in his care to buy out the contract of his lover, the courtesan Umegawa, here played by the skilled onnagata Sawamura Sōnosuke (1886–1924). After Chūbei reveals his crime — a capital offense — to Umegawa, the two resolve to enjoy whatever time their dwindling funds will allow them together. They travel through the countryside to Chūbei’s hometown, allowing him to bid farewell to his father before the lovers meet their fate.
