The Master Artisan Kakiemon dramatizes the 15-year long pursuit of the Arita potter Sakaida Kakiemon (1615–1653) to develop Chinese-style porcelain enamels. The story was inspired by Japanese adaptations of Self Help (1859), a treatise on worldly success through diligence and pluck by the Scottish journalist Samuel Smiles (1812–1904). Self Help was enormously influential in Meiji (1868–1912) Japan, as it resonated with the emerging ideal of creating a meritocratic society to replace an old regime structured upon hereditary rank.
