For 18 years, Sukeroku has searched for the man who killed his father and absconded with his heirloom sword. He picks fights in the pleasure quarters, goading others into drawing their weapons in order to verify whether they carry the stolen blade. He suspects the imperious samurai Ikyū, who seethes at Sukeroku’s insults but will not be provoked, even when Sukeroku offers him a pipe held between his toes.
