The play Dyed Red is a story of doomed love and the tensions between duty and human feeling based on events that took place in 1695. Hanshichi has left his new wife to live with the courtesan Sankatsu, the lover from his youth and mother of his daughter. Publicly disowned by his father and facing a death sentence for killing a man, Hanshishi and Sankatsu resolve to commit suicide together. Yet his family, understanding them to be bound by fate, forgive them their misdeeds.
