The actor Ichikawa Ennosuke (1888–1963) was a pioneer of the modern stage. Here, he is depicted as Hayami Tōta, a henchman of the military leader Yoshitomo, in the michiyuki or travel passage Mount Yoshino. In this dance, Hayami Tōta attempts to capture Shizuka Gozen, the mistress of Yoshitomo’s brother Yoshitsune, who he suspects of treachery. The pink background alludes to the famous cherry blossoms of Yoshino.
