John Brett is best known for his detailed landscape paintings, and for his close association with John Ruskin (whose work is exhibited on this wall). This sheet dates from late in Brett's life, when seascapes were among his favorite subjects. The use of small, repeated strokes of juxtaposed color is characteristic of his style, and it is especially effective here in evoking the textures of the rocks and moss along the shore.
