One of the American Impressionists, Hassam was a naturally gifted watercolorist, and worked in the medium throughout his career. He loved painting people in motion, and his style, with its energetic brushstrokes, was well suited to such subjects. Hassam also adored New York, and here he vividly captures the energy of New Yorkers navigating their city in the rain. John Ringling, who mostly eschewed Impressionist works, spent a significant amount of time in New York City, which perhaps explains his interest in acquiring this sheet.
