Marin was one of the earliest American artists to paint abstract images. He was drawn to seascapes—particularly along the coast of Maine, where this work was done—which encouraged his tendency toward abstraction, and were well suited to the free, fluid nature of his style. These traits are all evident in this highly-worked sheet, as is Marin's typical layering from transparency to opacity: note how the ocean churns with color, dynamically built up through watercolor washes, rubbing of the paper, and the use of colored chalks and charcoal.
