Collingwood was a student of John Ruskin, and eventually became his secretary and biographer. This sheet may have been painted in 1882 when the two men were traveling together. Here Coiling- wood employs light, layered washes of color for modeling—note how the blue creates shadow on the mountains—while also using short, repeated brushstrokes to suggest texture. The warm ochres, greens, and browns of the hillside at right come as a pleasant surprise amidst the cool pinks, lavenders and blues of the taller peaks, memorably capturing the varied terrain of this area in southeastern France.
