Martinelli trained in Italy and New York in both sculpture and painting, and is best known for his semi-abstract sculptures in welded metal. He came to Sarasota in 1964 for a one-month residency at The Ringling, sponsored by the Ford Foundation. In this study, presumably for a sculpture in metal, he develops two female poses: one seated, and the other standing, rotated at three different angles. Watercolor wash is his primary means of outlining and modeling the forms, while the agitated rust- colored pen lines indicate further thoughts about surface texture.
