Burchfield worked exclusively in watercolor, and was a passionate advocate of the medium. From the mid-1940s on, he returned to his earlier subject of sublime, fervent nature scenes, at times attempting to capture dramatic meteorological effects. In this sheet, which seems almost smeared and splattered by rain, we feel him sketching quickly, his brush as animated and forceful as the storm itself. His colors too are at a fever pitch, with rhythmic blacks, greys and browns underpinning explosive notes of gold, rust, lime green, and aqua.
