Lacroix portrays a calm, idyllic iteration of the contrasting seascapes popular in the 18th century. His paintings of the Mediterranean coast were favored souvenirs for French and Italian tourists. The buildings in these views are loosely based on Fort Saint-Jean in the painter’s southern French hometown of Marseilles. While living in Rome, Lacroix trained with Claude-Joseph Vernet, who was known for similar pendant marine works in The Ringling's collection.
