Though this work predates the full flowering of the Neoclassical movement by several decades, its heroic figures and clear composition anticipate stylistic developments later in the century. Dandré-Bardon, who studied first in his native France before traveling to Italy, was clearly inspired by classicizing strains in earlier Italian painting, notably the work of Raphael and Guido Reni. The careful calibration of color in this painting is particularly memorable, evidencing the artist’s special gift in this regard.
