This painting, executed by an artist in Guido Reni's workshop, is one of two known adaptations of a late work by the maser now in the Art Institute of Chicago. The painter of this work has departed substantially from Reni's original, reversing the composition, removing several background figures, changing the palette to saturated primary colors, and adding dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. Some scholars have seen this as the work of Giovanni Andrea Sirani (1610-1670), one of Reni's most important pupils and a friend and collaborator of Fra Bonaventura Bisi (for more on the Sirani family, see the next gallery of this exhibition).
