The languorous, twisting pose of John the Baptist here, and the dramatic fall of dark shadow on his luminous white flesh, recall the style of the famous painter known as Caravaggio (1571-1610). Caravaggio’s late work in Naples had a profound and lasting effect on art production there, influencing many local painters, including Filippo Vitale, and his stepson and collaborator, Pacecco de Rosa.
