Domenico Tintoretto was the son and heir to the paintings workshop of Jacopo Tintoretto, one of the most celebrated painters of 16th-century Venice. The dramatic light and dark shadows, and the velvety passages of saturated color, are typical of the work of both Jacopo and Domenico. The scene is not a narrative episode from scripture, but rather a representation of key figures in the lives of Mary and Christ. Such works were popular in Venetian art of this period.
