Art played an important role in the Spanish colonization of the Americas. The need for paintings to decorate the many newly built churches and monasteries resulted in the migration of many Spanish-trained artists to the Americas. They not only founded hugely productive workshops, but also professional academies and artistic dynasties. Nicolás Rodríguez Juarez was a fourth-generation colonial artist; his great-grandfather, Luis, settled in Mexico in the early 17th century. Nicolás is best known for having provided many altarpieces for the Cathedral in Mexico City in the 1690s. Here, he depicts an idyllic vision of the Christian religion exemplified by the calm, happy Holy Family, with St. Anne and St. Joachim, Mary's parents sitting in a carefully manicured European-style garden.
