This large painting was intended for the altar of a church, probably in the Lombardy region, where Bernardino Campi spent most of his life. The Virgin, seated at left, presents the newborn Christ Child to Saint Lucy, who stands at right, while an angel and St. Joseph (in back) look on. Lucy holds a plate with two eyes and an awl, referring to the legend of her martyrdom, in which her eyes were gouged out.
