In the visual tradition of mid-19th century Germany, apple picking was the predominant theme of September. Two children at far left pick fruit from a tree, while another at far right is upset after being struck by a falling apple. The child at center, astride a vase full of flowers and grapes, heralds the beginning of the fruit harvest. Also prefiguring the changing weather are the two children clasped together, surrounded by flowing drapery. This image seems inspired by a famous painting by French artist Pierre Auguste Cot, The Storm (1880), which Bitter likely knew from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
