Austrian-born sculptor Karl Bitter carved this high-relief marble frieze for the Main Hall of the Huntington Mansion. Each of the twelve panels represents a month of the year, through frolicking putti (or cupids)–loosely inspired by the Italian Renaissance–acting out complex scenes combining traditional allegory and 19th-century popular imagery. The intervening panels, depicting symbols of the arts and sciences, were designed by the decorating firm Ellin, Kitson & Co., frequent collaborators with Bitter.
