Scenes of the hunt, especially for hogs or boar, were common in medieval representations of November/December. Here, a child with an instrument similar to the cornu, the horn of the ancient Roman army (here used as a hunting horn), sits bestride a felled boar while another boy wearing a hunting hat carries off a fowl. Between them, a child grabs at the collar of a hunting dog. The inclusion of historical costumes – like the sleeping boy in Renaissance garb and the trumpeter’s medieval headgear – adds to the whimsy of the scene.
