An example of the artist’s penchant for mixing historical eras and locales, this scene is apparently set along the Nile River, evidenced by the tall grasses, the palm fan, and of course the Sphinx, which functions as a scarecrow in this harvesting month. At center, two children play with a swan, using the waterway as a place for leisure and relief from the summer heat, as was common in illustrations of July and August.
