By the 19th century, carnival scenes had become almost synonymous with the month of February. Music, dancing, and most of all, elaborate costumes were part of the festivities. To the right, a boy dressed in 18th-century court attire topples over a boy wearing a jester’s hat, while a Napoleonic soldier emerges from the folds of a curtain.
