August is traditionally the month for harvesting and transporting grain. Here, a boy pulls a hay cart, while another child, wearing a wreath, sits atop the cart gesticulating triumphantly. In the background at left is a church with an onion dome, evoking the architectural landscape of the artist’s Austrian homeland. At right, two children engage in a playful squabble.
