BiographyLuis Gispert (b. 1972) is a Cuban-American artist with roots in New York City and Miami. Working across a wide range of media, Gispert focuses on youth culture and hip-hop influences. He first came to the art world's attention with a series of photographs and videos depicting young women dressed in traditional cheerleading uniforms but also sporting the ornate gold chains, earrings, and rings associated with hip-hop. The juxtaposition of the two cultural references highlighted with increasing pervasiveness of hip-hop culture in all aspects of society. He has stated that the first ten years of his career were focused on understanding why certain objects and events affected him both emotionally and physically. Luild Gispert holds an MFA from Yale University.
