BiographyIona rozeal brown was born in Washington D.C. and studied at Pratt Institute and the San Francisco Art Institute before completeing her MFA at Yale alongside several ofthe other artists on display. Her most recent body of work explores the complex cultural interchanges between hip-hop and African American culture with that of contemporary Japanese culture. brown creates elaborate mythologies which aid in her exploration ofthe societal pressures on young women. She equates the juxtaposition of color and texture in her work with the common hip-hop practice of sampling. For brown, her work is the end result fo the "self-sampling and remixing, [of] devices employed by media to create its own endless permutations or represetnations and meanings."
