Nadine Robinson

British-American, born 1968
BiographyNadine Robinson (b. 1968) was born in London, raised in Kingston, Jamaic, and now resides in the Bronx, New York. Her work is a fusion of influences acquired from having lived in these different cultures and, therefore, may be seen as a quintessentially "American" experience. As a conceptual artist, Robinson is known for creating sculptural installations and "sonic paintings" which incorporate both sound and light. She frequently amasses quantities of large speakers which she uses to produce walls of sound. Working within a modernist paradigm, she explores what she deems outmoded philosophical systems, the "unreal," with the material culture of the working-class urban experience, the "real." Robinson received her BA from SUNY Stonybrook and her MFA from NYU. Like several of the artists in this exhibition, she was an artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
