Sofia Maldonado

American, born 1984
BiographySofia Maldonado was born in Puerto Rico to a Cuban mother and cites these two Caribbean cultures as the foundation of her artistic expression. She received her BFA from La Escuela de Artes Plasticas in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2006 and then her MFA from Pratt Institute in New York in 2008. Sofia is best known as a muralist but has also been involved with the international skateboarding community through projects such asthe exhibition Skate my Patria, part of the Tenth Havana Biennial in Havana, Cuba, and The Bowl, part of the Tropical Storm Series project, which saw the transformation of an abandoned pool near El Yunque rainforest, Puerto Rico, into a skate bowl with the help of the local skating community. Sofia Maldonado references island landscapes and attitudes, urban graffiti, hip-hop fashions, and skate culture, frequently confronting stereotypes of women in an effort to establish post-feminist ideals of womanhood.
