Cuban-American, born 1956
BiographyJosé Chardiet was born in Havana, Cuba in 1956. He immigrated with his family to the United States in 1960, where they then settled in New Haven, Connecticut. José earned his BA from Southern Connecticut State University in 1980, and then went on to study at Kent State University, where he earned his MFA in 1983.

Some of the honors that he has received include: an Artist Fellowship in 1984, from the Creative Glass Center of America, and the Cintas Fellowship from the Institute of International Education, 1988-1989.

José’s teaching experience is extensive. From 1991 to 2000 he held the position of Professor of Glass and Sculpture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has also taught at Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Crafts, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.

José has participated in many one-person, invitational and group exhibitions. He has work in large number of private and public collections including: Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; Museum of Art and Design, New York, NY; Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY; Yokohama Museum of Art, Yokohama, Japan; and Musee des Arts Decortifs, Lausanne, Switzerland. He is widely published both nationally and internationally. Since 2000, José has maintained his studio in Providence, RI, where he works full time creating his sculpture.
