American, 1950 – 2020
BiographyMichael Glancy was born in 1950 in Detroit, Michigan. In 1973 he graduated from the University of Denver with a Fine Arts degree. From Denver, Glancy went to study with Dale Chihuly at the Rhode Island School of Design, spending summers with Chihuly at the Pilchuck Glass Center in Stanwood, Washington. Glancy began working with cold glass at RISD, sculpting it through sandblasting. He also learned to cover these carved forms with electroformed copper, silver or gold. The combination of these techniques allowed Glancy to truly take on his own artistic personality. In 1977, Glancy graduated from RISD with a BFA, and in 1980 with a Masters. 1980 also marked the year of Glancy's first New York City solo exhibition which was highlighted by the addition of his work to the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Since then, Glancy's work has been consistently hailed for its graceful complexity, startling originality and beautiful craftsmanship.
