Michael Anderson

1968 – 2020
BiographyMichael Anderson (b. 1968) is a largely self-taught artist. A girlfriend in college encouraged him to take a drawing class which led to his career as a visual artist. He began primarily working with oil paint but always included space for collage. Over time, collage became his primary medium however his works usually have painted borders. Anderson speaks of collage in terms of "collecting" which he literaly does as he takes his source material, advertising posters, directly from the street of the world. Anderson cites numerous artists from the collage artist Romare Bearden to the abstract painters Wasily Kandinsky and Jackson Pollock as influences as well as the European Affichistes of the 1950s who used street posters as collage elements. Anderson's work speaks to the multiplicity of images we are bombarded with on a daily basis and the pervasiveness of the street aesthetic in all aspects of visual culture.
