In the play, Sympathetic Chatter and the Scandalous Haircomb, Onoe Matsusuke is a petty criminal called Kōmori Yasu, or “Yasu the Bat,” in reference to the bat-shaped mark tattooed on his cheek as a punishment for a past crime. Matsusuke first performed this colorful role in 1909 to great acclaim, and revisited it several times over his career, making it one of his signature pieces.
