These paired clothing fasteners are extremely decorative. The juxtaposition of designs from nature, symbolic of flowing water and blossoms, creates beautiful tensions with the rigid metallic surfaces. This contrast is further reinforced by the utilitarian function of such artistic expressiveness. Additionally, the luminosity of the precious metals reflects the light, enhancing the colors of the women's clothing. The arabesques of these patterns strongly resemble those found in jewelry worn covering other parts of the body, and probably have similar mythic meaning.
