In the sixteenth century, the world was believed to consist of four elements: Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. Water is represented as a market scene dominated by fishmongers. Bassano’s canvas, and the one beside it, teems with still life elements though they were made in the decades before still life became an independent genre.
