The intense directness and naturalism of Leandro Bassano's portraits were an inspiration for later Italian painters such as Caravaggio and the Carracci family. Portraits with bold brushwork and palettes limited to black, white and flesh tones also inspired Dutch portraitists such as Frans Hals and Rembrandt.
