Francesco Bassano was a son of Jacopo Bassano, the founder of a family workshop of painters based outside Venice specializing in religious works. This painting was one of a series of nine commissioned for a church in Brescia. The scene depicted here is described in the Gospels, and takes place after the Last Supper, in the Garden of Gethsemane. Christ asked Peter, James and John to keep watch with him while he awaited his arrest. As Christ prayed to his father "that the cup should pass from me"—a reference to his impending sacrifice—his apostles fell asleep.
