The painting shows the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and others, weeping over Christ’s dead body after the Crucifixion. Rembrandt is universally acclaimed as the greatest master painter of the Dutch Golden Age. The signature at bottom center is probably a later addition to a work made in the artist’s studio. It is possible that it a collaborative work, with different apprentices and associates painting different parts of the picture. The differences in handling in the faces support this idea.
