Empress Maria-Theresa of Austria was one of the most important monarchs of her day. Though her father Charles VI named her as his successor, her claim to the throne of the Holy Roman Empire was contested. This was a cause of the Austrian War of Succession, which lasted from 1740 to 1748. The war embroiled much of Europe, including Britain, and led to the Seven Years' War in which the Marquis of Granby was a hero.
