Rembrandt and his followers had a penchant for dressing up their subjects in historicizing costume. This (unidentified) sitter wears medieval dress and may be depicted in the guise of the heroine from a popular history play, Gijsbrecht van Aemstel (1637). The portrait shares a number of features with its presumed pendant now in the Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge, UK), including a shadowy background and starkly illuminated head, suggesting that both paintings were executed by the same artist.
