Snyders painted monumental still lifes. One theme of this painting, which depicts the kitchen or larder of a fine house, is abundance resulting from productivity and prosperity. The assemblage of game overflows onto the floor. Heaped on the table are a swan, a peacock, a wild boar, a deer, two rabbits, and other smaller game birds. Finches strung together on a rush thong have fallen to the floor. Fruits, vegetables, and a lobster add notes of bright color to the more monochrome pelts and plumage.
