Paolo Veronese was one of the most important painters of Renaissance Venice. This large altarpiece showcases his talent for creating complex, memorable images through careful calibrations of color, light, and pattern. Veronese pushes the main action— the Holy Family pausing to partake of miraculously-provided food and water—close to the viewer’s space, using bright colors and lighter tones to emphasize the figures. Meanwhile, the dark pattern of palm fronds behind serves as a dramatic, living backdrop for the scene of nourishment. This painting was one of John Ringling’s first important purchases of Italian art, and has become emblematic of the museum’s collection.
