In the New Testament, Joseph was warned that Herod was searching for the Christ Child, so Joseph took the Child and the Virgin to safety in Egypt. The weary family paused during their journey. The Virgin was famished, but the date palm’s branches were too high to reach. Jesus commanded the tree to lower its branches. In Stanzione’s painting, the dates are gathered together with pears, apples, figs, and other fruits in an elegant still life from which the Virgin plucks a piece of fruit.
