This is the earliest dated painting by Juan de Pareja and one of very few of his works in the United States. Pareja’s mother was an African-descended enslaved woman, and Pareja himself was an enslaved assistant to the famous Spanish painter Diego Velázquez. After being granted his freedom in 1654, Pareja became a successful independent painter, though only a few of his works are known today. The first-ever exhibition devoted to Juan de Pareja will take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2023.
