Veronese produced a number of portraits, and this is one of his earliest full-length examples. Francesco Franceschini was a nobleman from Vicenza whose family fortune came from the silk trade. The low viewpoint and the surrounding architecture make the sitter look extremely tall, while the static column contrasts with his active pose. Grasping the edge of his fur-trimmed cloak and turning his head and torso, Franceschini seems to have just become aware of something happening in the viewer’s space. The tiny dog also seems to be awaiting his master’s reaction to events outside the picture.
