Richard R Mottino

American, 1924 – 2022
BiographyRichard R. (Dick) Mottino, born November 21, 1924 in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, NY, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2022 in Bradenton, Florida.

Dick is survived by his sister, Joan L. Kullman, her children Lisa D. Kullman (sons Wesley R. Mottino Walther and Ethan A. Mottino Walther), Christopher R. Kullman (wife Janette Cacioppo Kullman and daughter Pietrina Cacioppo Kullman), his cousins Roma and Patricia along with their children and grandchildren, all of whom - along with many close and dear friends - lovingly filled out his long and blessed life.

Grateful for a life-time of valued memories, many created with his father Hercules and mother Rosetta (Ferno), Aunt Nina (Mottino) and Uncle Billy (Corino), and, of course, his younger sister Joan with whom he remained close for over nine decades. His early years were very rich with familial love along with adventures in New Jersey and Manhattan. Dick’s first language was Italian, his childhood nickname being “Russo” for his head of thick red hair.

After serving for close to three years in the 15th Air Force (1942-1945) stationed in Italy, Dick was discharged on the eve of his 21st birthday. Once back in civilian life, he graduated from Cornell University followed by a long career in electronics and telecommunications in NYC, CT and FL.

For much of his early to mid adult years Dick resided in Manhattan. Later life was spent in a condo overlooking Sarasota Bay. After retiring, Dick began a second ‘career’ as a distinguished docent at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, FL. His decades at the Ringling fulfilled him deeply. His knowledge of the masterpieces along with Italian history created detailed, unique and entertaining tours.

Every Spring and Summer Dick would substitute his view of Sarasota Bay with Florence, Italy’s Arno River, where he resided in an apartment for extended periods of time. Eating gelato daily and taking art courses at the Uffizi Museum rounded out his time with close friends he made there over the years.

A consummate lover of the Arts, wherever he lived Dick surrounded himself with Ballet, Opera, Classical Music, and fine art Museums. It was akin to breathing for him. Dick supported the Ringling Museum, WUSF, Sarasota Orchestra, and Sarasota Opera, along with the Metropolitan Museum in NYC.
