BiographyRobinson 1980: Personal name at first nara Tashichi, then Sugiura Sen'emon. A native of Matsumoto in the province of Shinano, where he worked for the Ueda Matsudaira family. He was a pupil of Nara Toshinaga, and married the elder sister of Nara Masanaga I. He was a master (some say the inventeor) of the sunk relief technique known as shishiai-bori and is accounted one of the Three Great Nara Masters (Nara sansaku).
