Rodin is probably the best-known sculptor of the 19th century, and often credited with ushering in the modern era in sculpture. He produced thousands of drawings and watercolors during his career. This sheet, from late in his life, shows the economy of his watercolor technique. After sketching in the seated figure with minimal, assured pencil lines, he then models the woman's flesh with delicate, transparent washes. His sculptor's eye is also evident in the hair, where the thicker, looser brushwork creates a textured mass reminiscent of clay.
