Mária Lugossy brought international attention to Hungarian
studio glass with her groundbreaking glass sculpture.
Inspired by her experience of motherhood, Lugossy created
a body of work in the Genesis series in which she explored
concepts related to the primordial origins of the world, the
birth of life, and ecological themes. For Power of Nature IV,
embryo-like optical lenses appear to be rising and breaking
through the surface of an abstract landscape with industrial
sheet glass referencing the layers of earth strata. Lugossy
centered her artistic practice on cold-working techniques,
manipulating the contours and surfaces of glass through
cutting, polishing and sandblasting. With the use of these
techniques, the artist created contrasting glossy and matte
textures to accentuate the three-dimensional form.
