Based in Cologne, Germany, and New Orleans, Louisiana, the artist Sibylle Peretti explores the tension between beauty and disease, intimacy and distance, and innocence and knowledge in her work. In the Silent Children series, Peretti transformed images of children from old medical books by taking them out of the scientific context and creating a dream-like environment where the children may heal through a mystical connection with nature. Glass serves as a transparent canvas for Peretti to collage, paint and engrave nature-inspired motifs, like bees, honeycombs and butterflies. Despite their naked vulnerability, the children appear introspective and as if they hold prophetic knowledge for how to find harmony with the natural world. The artist’s investigation into the relationship between humans and nature results in enigmatic imagery intended to impart a mystery and also inspire the viewer to consider one’s identity and experience of the world.
